COPESSA is a community-based non-profit organisation based in Soweto, Johannesburg, which primarily focuses on the prevention of child abuse and neglect. We at COPESSA are of the view that when you give counselling and medical attention to a child who has been abused, it is already late. Hence our major focus on primary prevention.

In their book, Within Our Reach – Breaking the Cycle of Disadvantage, Lisbeth and Daniel Schorr say: “We are all (emphasis mine), diminished when large numbers of parents are incapable of nurturing their dependent young, and when pervasive alienation erodes the nation’s sense of community.” Child Abuse does not just affect the child and their immediate family, but has wider societal repercussions. It touches us all. It is the great realisation that child abuse and neglect, affects all of us, irrespective of whose child is being abused, that gave birth to COPESSA.
